Guenther Uecker in Cape Town
The exhibition “The Human Abused – 14 pacified Implements” of Guenther Uecker in Cape Town, South Africa, should be regarded as the portrait of an artist in Germany and his protest against the “…abuse of man by man” in general and against the violence against foreigners in Germany in particular.
Based on the stations of the Cross, the artist created 14 installations in his typical language form: nails, wood, linen, stones, ash, sand and writings behind glass to provoke, to show, to warn – but also to reconcile and encourage the dialogue tht unifies.
The Human Abused
“The Human Abused” was created for the Institute for Foreign relations between autumn 1992 and sptring 1993 and is travelling around the world; after Athens it came to Cape Town as station 47. The artist is already on his flight to New York – and this at almost 81 years of age and as active and full of vision and plans as ever!
I created a short video based on some snapshots I took on what was probably the hottest day in Cape Town for a long time!
It will be available shortly.
