We are living in times of rapid change and the explosion of the mobile market. People use their mobile phones to search the net, to find what they want, to compare it and – to buy it. Sales figures triggered via the mobile net are staggering – and as web designers we have to adapt – which means also to focus on new technologies and learn new languages.

Over the past years, Semiomantics has always evolved along with WordPress Developments. Remarkably, the latest WP update allows for much more creativity. While our Semiomantics based author blogs display perfectly on smartphones through integration of the right plugins and settings, there’s much more scope that we will be looking into at this weekend’s Ycademy Seminar 2012 – which is also a testing ground for the new Semiomantics XO 2012 – to be released soon.

Sliders are the Trend 2012

With sliders being an important part of the Trend 2012 as Website Design and “the Look” are concerned, I am currently experimenting with a fading slider – although extremely frustrating with often failing Internet connections and extremely slow lines down here… it feels like the sun flare is targeting us specifically and knocking us out completely!

Besides using sliders in the header or sidebar widgets or even blog posts and pages, we can now use them even in the background – which opens a lot more creative options and perspective.

At the Ycademy Seminar, we will work on becoming familiar with the new features of the XO 2012 and improve our knowledge of CSS3, HTML5 and jQuery so we are in a position to ‘play’ with the script, explore new avenues and, last but not least, adapt XO to our customers’ needs.

Semiomantics XO with CSS3 and HTML5

Time has come to learn about new technologies available for web designers and developers. All common browsers are increasingly able to read and interpret CSS 3 and HTML5 and about all computers are equipped to read java and jQuery. Therefore new possibilities become available to XO developers which we will focus on during the January Seminar.

XO has evolved over the past 4 years along with WordPress Developments. The theme has become responsive and shows perfectly on smart phones and tablets.

Subsequent to the release of WordPress 3.3.x XO needed some adjustments and updates which we have implemented and tested. New design functions become available for advanced customization. XO remains the most flexible theme for custom development, accessible to most anyone.

The goal of the seminar is to become familiar with XO and it’s new features as well as to learn how CSS3, HTML5 and jQuery allow to adapt XO to most any customer’s needs.

Some of the technical issues we will have a detailed look at are:

• Content and Frame sliders with Pro Slider and SlideDeck Pro

We will show how to make the best use of plug-ins for the Mobile Web, Social Networking, Social Media Publishing, Social Network Marketing as well as for more attractive display. • Bulk Upload ( csv )

Cup of Gold

“Cup of Gold” is an interesting search term with a whopping 37,3 million returns on Google. . .  but what I found was not exactly what I was looking for, at least not within the very concise context I was planning for my article to feature my Cup of Gold Image.

“Cup of Gold” as to Wikipedia is John Steinbeck’s first novel… some historical fiction which was more or less based on “… the privateer Henry Morgan’s life and death. It centres on Morgan’s assault and sacking of the city of Panama, sometimes referred to as the ‘Cup of Gold’, and the woman fairer than the sun reputed to be found there.”

Reminds me that it’s a while since I read Steinbeck…

“Cup of Gold” is described by Susan F. Beegel as follows: “. . . From the mid-1650s through the 1660s, Henry Morgan, a pirate and outlaw of legendary viciousness, ruled the Spanis Main. He ravaged the coasts of Cuba and America, striking terror wherever he went. Morgan was obsessive. He had two driving ambitions: to possess the beautiful woman called La Santa Roja and to conquer Panama, the “cup of gold.” Steinbeck’s first novel and sole work of historical fiction, Cup of Gold is edgy and adventurous, brash and distrustful of society, and sure to add new dimensions to readers’ perceptions of this all-American writer.”

Finding what you are not looking for and not knowledgeable about is always an exciting source for new ideas… at least for me :)

I will remember this when I write about “Obsession”. . . which of course brings me to fragrances… perfumes… and flowers in my garden! My preferred topic!

In fact, what I was looking for was at the bottom of  that Goolge Top 10 page:  “Cup of Gold Plant”. . . as “Cup of Gold” is the common name for Solandra Maxima!

Solandra Maxima! What an amazing flower! What an amazing fragrance… and yes, don’t eat this poison…

I’m happiest when discovering my magic garden, especially in the early morning hours when the first golden rays glide over the mountain tops and unveil the secrets of the new-born day, accompanied by the busy buzz of bees and birds and the beguiling fragrances of a softly rustling breeze.

Solandra Maxima – with 3,710.000 returns on Google – is a tropical plant that originated in Mexico, was brought as an ornamental to Hawai where it possibly got its common name “Cup fo Gold”…  and somehow this stunning vine with its large, leathery creamy-gold flowers marked by dark purple veins and exuding a strong scent between coconut and chamomile (my personal description), found its way to South Africa. I first saw it in the Company Gardens in Cape Town when I was a little girl… and then I planted it in my own garden!

The surprise of seeing it suddenly in full bloom in my secret jungle was yesterday’s gift – immediately shared in the Ycademy Seminar October 2009!

Britain’s Big Freeze

The snow and cold weather grips the nation, with temperatures falling as low as -17C in some areas. Britains’ big freeze of 2010 is quite a contrast to other years when temperatures were so mild that a stroll along the beach was a pleasant experience. Today we stay huddled up indoors to keep warm, fires or central heating on and only a few brave folk venturing out on the nearly empty roads. Many main roads round here are passable, but require caution and very slow speeds, however, the minor roads are really treacherous. Ice is the main problem causing both people and cars to skid.

The cold weather is here to last for a few more days, so the weathermen tell us, creating problems for many citizens around the British Isles. This weather has not only hit Britain but also many countries in the northern hemisphere, France, Norway, Spain and central Europe to name a few, whilst the mediterranean countries enjoy warmer weathe than usual. I personally don’t remember us here in our part of the country having such a long, cold spell for many years. As a child we used to have winters like this, but over the past 20years or so winters round here have been reasonably mild. Is this the ‘extremes’ that we were warned about with the coming of the global warming?

Preparing for MMX

All the hustle and bustle of Christmas 2009 is nearly all behind us and so we begin to look forward to and prepare for MMX, 2010, the New Year ahead and the begining of a  new decade.

Many of the large companies like Microsoft have already planned for the new year ahead with new edtions of popular products, for example: Microsoft Office 2010. We too in our own way plan the year ahead making plans for the future; re-designing, revamping, improving  and creating new products.

In our personal lives we often make New Years  resolutions: to better ourselves, go on a diet, go on holiday  giving ourselves new goals to drive us forwards, things to look forward to.

Zygmunt Bell in Krakow’s Wawel Cathedral…”Big Sig” still is where it was hung in 1521… it needs the strength of ten men to ring the giant bell every Christmas, New Year Day…

Christmas 2009

The flurries of snow turned into a blizzard overnight, but here by this morning we saw the snow slowly melting as the temperature increased to just over freezing. In our corner of the world we often escape the worst of the weather, however elsewhere heavy snowfalls in the U.K. have caused travel chaos, forced schools to shut and cut power to homes. Will we have a white Christmas? we will have to see as Christmas Day is still a week away.

Planning Ahead for 2010

Planning Ahead for 2010 first we really need to take stock of what happened in our business online in 2009.

•  did our business online in 2009 go as planned
• which part of the plan worked best
• which system failed to produce a good result and why
• what did we learn from 2009

Going over what you accomplished with your business during the past helps to focus on producing a successful plan for the year ahead. Analyse the successes as well as the failures and look at the trends, this will be a good indicator for the year ahead.

For 2010 its a matter or writing down your main objective, the goal, and brainstorming.

Christmas 2009

It is just over a week to Christmas and we have had our first flurries of snow yesterday. Nothing settling as yet but who knows, maybe we will have an old fashioned white Christmas this year.

It’s such a busy time of year for most of us with all the festive preparations. Presents, cards, deorations, food shopping are just a few of the activities that occupy our minds these days. Shops over laden with goods, queues everywhere; tv’s pumping out the Christmas commercials, spend, spend, spend! buy, buy, buy! Let’s all be jolly, but who will pay the bills?

Is this what Christmas is all about, a time of excess and spending more can you can afford? Parents made to feel guilty if they can’t afford the latest hot toy for their little darling!

For me, Christmas means family, a wonderful excuse to get the family together again, exchange the latest news, hot gossip, jokes,  share a meal, a glass of two and above all to have FUN together! LAUGHTER! That’s the real JOY of Christmas.

year 2010 

As we prepare for the forthcoming festivities our thoughts extend also to the next year ahead – 2010 and what it holds for us all, for our families, friends and the world at large. The world seems to be in turmoil these days, a world out of balance:  everywhere chaos and change; the earth protesting,  factions at war, strikes,  and now even the members of the Climate Summit in Copenhagen cannot seem to come to a solid agreement on such an important issue as protecting our environment. Even if we cannot truly control what is happening in the world today, should we not sit down and just honestly re-think how we treat this earth that we rely on  and how we treat each other these days.  

Thinking of the year ahead and business matters, our last monthly Ycademy Seminar for 2009 was the preparation and extension of the Path to Profitability to 2010 and new products like the Semiomantics XO 2010.

Semionantics XO 2010

Semionantics XO 2010 is an amazing modified blog theme that requires no plugins. Any serious blogger knows what a pain these can be. With every update we encounter conflicts and some technical problems, even if they are just minor ones they are real time wasters when trying to solve the problem. Do we really need these updates so frequently? I, for one,  am not so sure. No plugins means we also use less of the valuable server resources we pay for, Semiomantics XO 2010 using 50% less memory than its earlier version. Things indeed should run better, faster and smoother.

 I am only too happy to acquire a plugin-free,  script.

2009 is drawing to an end and we herewith finalize the Ycademy Seminars and Trainings Schedule for the rest of 2009 and into the new year 2010!

WOW! Depending on whether or not our Seminar participants from the far South – like South Africa and New Zealand – have received their CD material in the post by today latest, we will either do the planned Seminar on MS Office Enterprise (see my mail yesterday) or we have to switch over to the IT Consultant Agenda as you can see in today’s post HERE.

We will decide this at tonight’s WebMaster Call at 7 pm London time.
