I just got some screenshots directly from the iPhone in Europe to demonstrate how the new Monkey Valley Resort Website actually looks on the Mobile web – and I’m absolutely thrilled! The quality and resolution are just outstanding and I left the image big so you can appreciate it here even though the picture may take a moment to load. This is soooo sexy!

Above, you see the Frontpage of the Monkey Valley Resort Website, which features a large elegant slider displaying the various chapters and attractions of the hotel resort 30 kms out of Cape Town, South Africa. What is remarkable here is how beautifully the slider displays – all based on new technology as, sadly, Flash does not display on mobile phones and this forced us to adapt in our Semiomantics Website Development, learning new languages like CSS3 and HTML5.

Much if not most of today’s business on the Internet is piped in one way or another through the mobile web… a reason why Monkey Valley Resort had to be visible on mobile.

The Importance of Functionality

The Importance of Functionality in terms of Website Design has a lot to do with the ease and user-friendly interaction between the website and the website visitor: the website has to communicate to the visitor what it is all about in an attractive way, guiding through what it has to offer and fulfilling almost intuitively what the visitor is looking for and making it easy to follow through with the desired action – say to book a room in a hotel…, to buy, pay and even download say an ebook… or to simply offer various sights of a specific area or place that shows the visitor what he can expect, eg. in a holiday resort or when researching a new home in real estate.

Today, being visible on the mobile web is crucial to the success of any website or Internet business – and therefore one of the most important functionalities of a website or blog.

Nowhere more than on the Internet do we see such rapid and continuous change and do we have to adapt, learn new languages and keep developing our knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis as in the virtual arena. A website or blog is not built to last forever and it needs a regular allocation of funds (budget) – it’s a project in constant development, adapting to the changes, changing with the trends and always trying to offer readers and visitors something new, something modern and going the extra mile to capture the traffic that leads to business and success.

Great news: the uMthwakazi Band will be playing at Monkey Valley Resort in Noordhoek, South Africa, on 29th January 2012 as of 2 pm! Besides this date being my birthday, it seems that I will be going for a heavy camera session with this dynamic group of musicians playing a contemporary and yet traditional mix of Xhosa indigenous music, classical and modern with an amazingly versatile young vocalist who handles variations between Jazz, Opera and traditionally African with ease and in a very personal style.

Monkey Valley Resort has a history of musicians and bands playing at special occasions and especially on Sunday afternoons. Many guests will be pleased to see an African band like uMthwakazi complementing the beauty of the “Out of Africa” setting this unique Nature Resort just 30 kms out of Cape Town has to offer.

About Mthwakazi

Here’s a little bit of background about Mthwakazi:

uMthwakazi grew up singing in choirs. Afr winning Opera competitions, she worked in the theatre from the age of 13 years and later studied Xhosa Bow Music at the University of FortHare.

Ultimately, in 2009, she toured with Isango-Portobello, the Oliveir Award-winning South African Opera Company from Cape Town, to London, Paris and Holland with such productions as “The Mysteries” by Eric Abraham and “The Magic Flute” by W.A. Mozart, both directed by Mark Dornford-May.

On her return she persued her own solo music career where she staged with such icons as Madosini, Thandiswa Mazwai, Jonas Gwangwa, Sibongile Khumalo, Tina Schouw and Neo Muyanga.

She featured as a guest musician in a recently released album and appeared in a DVD performance by Simphiwe Dana.

uMthwakazi is currently recording her debut music record in Muizenberg to be released early this year, 2012.

Happy Weddings in Cape Town on Google

Monitoring our SEO results on a regular basis is an ongoing process – also in 2012. We are determined to give our customers the very best service and help them achieve high rankings on Google Top 10. This is nothing we can nor should take for granted as algorhythms change and so many relatively volatile factors are involved, however, keeping an eye on the pulse and being flexible allows to firstly observe any major changes and then adapt accordingly and as fast as possible.

In this respect, I watched the results of  “Happy Weddings in Cape Town” on Google – this being a short and sweet article published yesterday on the relatively new website I created for Monkey Valley Resort HERE.

The result – and this within only 42 seconds – was absolutely astonishing: Position One on Google ahead of 2,560,000 search results! See the screenshot I took yesterday, below:

This morning – basically a little less than a day later – I wondered how the ranking would look now – and here is the even more spectacular result: Positions 1, 2 and 3 on Google Top 10!

What does this mean in terms of Cape Town Weddings and Monkey Valley Resort?

It’s quite simple – yet demands highly qualified skills and the right WordPress based Semiomantics Script to be achieved: if you take the above screenshot as an example, you see a typical Google page. There are Google Ads at the top (on a  yellow background), Google Ads to the right (continued to the next page indicating this is a highly sought-after keyword and gets lots of advertising) – and then you see basically 10 websites competing for the top 10 positions on Google (this is page one of Google with a total of 2,560,000 search returns… with always 10 websites per page… do your own maths as to how many Google pages on this keyword combination alone there are…!)

It means that the 10 websites who made it to Google Top 10 are visible for anyone punching in “Happy Weddings in Cape Town” – perhaps because that’s what they want to go for while planning for their own wedding… – and of course these 10 websites are the one’s these people will click on! Logical – who goes any further if what they are looking for is on the first page?

It means that these 10 websites who made it to the top get all the attention… the clicks… the so-called traffic! It means that the potential of making a sale is divided amongst those 10!

Of course, there are all these Google Ads – meaning the owners of those websites pay heavily – 24/7/365 – to be visible on Page one on Google and get attention as well! It means that heavy Google Ads budgets are allocated each and every month – short-term, medium-term and long-term… and forever rising. A budget of $50 a day brings you nowhere given the price a click can cost these days! So do your maths again… and decide what makes more sense: investing in the right website (yes, there are updates and upgrades as the Internet changes all the time, that’s just as it is…) or be dependent on heavy advertising without a guarantee to get it right (keywords move like mercury…)

Google Top 10

The choice is – as always your’s! Nothing stops you from doing both: getting the right website and advertising with AdSense. But if you’re on a tight budget the answer is pretty clear – yes?

What is needed, however, is regular posting, meaning writing good content on a daily basis to keep things moving and alive. The Google spyders like to be stimulated and fed with new original material each day… and you may be in right competition on special keywords – like in this wedding example. In this case you either do it yourself, or you employ someone who takes on this important online marketing and publishing job – or you outsource to a professional who may be the best guarantee for continued success on Google.

Being visible on Google Top 10 – like you see above… meaning 3 positions of 10 on page one, means that you get 30% of the traffic! Meaning a large chance to get visitors to your website… and if your website is attractive and offers the answers and sales pipeline people are looking for, your online business will grow and bring you the desired success.

I hope I could explain this well and simple enough to respond to many questions received on the topic. It ain’t easy… I know! But being number one on a Formula One track ain’t either… and this is not much different, really!

Save Money with a Semiomantics Website

How does this demonstrate how you can save money with a Semiomantics Website?

Well, the fight on the Internet highway is for a Google Top 10 position – either on the left side (see screenshot above), where there are 10 positions for super sexy websites and blogs that make it to the top – or on top (yellow area) and to the right where people spend continuously increasing daily budgets for Google Ads… simply to be visible when someone types this keyword string into the Google search engine.

The new Monkey Valley Resort website development nears its completion!

The integration of the Booking System at Monkey Valley Resort seems to be more complex than expected; accordingly, I still wait for the integration link to finish off the website and take off the front slider that points out that this is a website built on a WP based Semiomantics XO – the best script out there when it comes to visibility on Google!

Obviously, it’s then a matter of doing regular editing and publishing of good original content to keep the positions in the keyword areas targeted; however, from the results seen so far – be it for the Best Cape Town Conferencing Venue, the Best Cape Town Weddings, Thorfynn’s Restaurant Christmas Lunch or the New Year’s Eve Spectacular or Monkey Valley Resort – well, as the results clearly have shown, the initial investment in the right website has paid off manyfold! And this before its completion!

Either you ensure your presence on Google top rankings by regular, daily Google ads – which is quite costly given the fact that you can’t go far even with $50 a day given the constantly rising cost – that’s dependancy short-term and long-term – or you invest once in the right Script and capture top entries on Google Top 10 on your desired keywords.

And here’s my last touch: the Apple Touch Icon for Monkey Valley Resort – in synch with the branded monkey on a golden triangle. This is the big version to let you see some of the details…

The sizes we will need once we are ready to use the Apple Touch Icon for Monkey Valley Resort will be 116 px and 57 px  versions – as per the two pictures you see below. Obviously, I have them without the typical “Apple shadow” and that’s what we would load later… but here we get a good idea of how it would display.

What counts is that even at that small size, 57 x 57 px, it’s recognizeable. I know it works as I have designed the favicon (that’s 16 x 16 px…) and even at that minute dimension one can recognize it in the browser bar.

So here we have perfect synergy: you will see this exact sculpture in bronze when arriving at Monkey Valley Resort in Noordhoek, South Africa… nestled on the slopes of a steep and triangular Chapman’s Peak rising high above it… in the real world so to speak – you can’t miss it!

For me as an artist and web designer it was just obvious and logic to create an online version based on these immediate impressions. It was quite an evolution… as Logo and Icon Design always are! In the end, simplicity wins!

Finally, Monkey Valley Resort can shout loud and clear: “Follow Us on Twitter!” and “Follow Us on Facebook!”

While it may be totally normal for Internet Marketers and Social Network professionals to have a Twitter and Facebook account and to invite everyone to “Follow Us on Twitter and Facebook”, this is by far not the case – yet – with many of our customers. In fact, it can take quite some effort and persuasion to get the accounts set up and then  connect the new website to both Twitter and Facebook!

While we want to automate the posting process itself from one end – for instance with a plugin – visitors to the website need to find the famous little blue bird to ‘tweet’ or the big blue “F” to follow and like – or a personalized version to “follow” as I designed for the new Monkey Valley Resort website, using the branded little logo with the monkey on the golden triangle.

Semiomantics Web Design paired with continuous posting via smart Online Publishing are the key to not only gaining top positions on search engines like Google – but also keeping them!

Time for a quick check-up as to the performance of our current website development “Monkey Valley Resort”… here specifically as to how my article earlier today on the South African Band “Hot Water” ranks on Google.

As you can see on the above screenshot, my article on Hot Water is on Google Top 10 right away… and this on 14 million search returns! That’s what I call cool – and it’s Semiomantics, what else?

Jokes aside, this is indeed a fantastic SEO performance – and here I am not talking about my own performance but that of  Monkey Valley Resort – the new website I am still completing! Seeing it grabbing positions 3 and 4 on Google Top 10 within just a few minutes just makes my heart smile!  Results like these – especially where my customers are concerned – give me the daily kick to continue these sometimes really not easy and very strenuous and time-consuming tasks, especially on terribly slow connections these days and a computer that’s running regularly out of memory… I will have to live with this for a small while still… but can’t wait to upgrade… drastically that is!

Besides, I was told that as per mid 2012 we may have optic fibre cables in South Africa and connections comparable to Europe… they’re as far as Nigeria… and we are at the far tip of the continent. So there’s hope and more on that in another post :)

Parenting today… and how to bring up children to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world – this is the topic of  “Brave Green Kids”, the first book written by Judy Sole and presented at yesterday’s Book Launch at the “Crowned Eagle” of Monkey Valley Resort. A golden sunset marked the event and the leader of the Green Party of South Africa asked for moments of silence to mentally embrace the world with one’s wish for peace and compassion while the sun dipped into the Atlantic Ocean and… disappeared.

While the “Brave Green Kids” Book Launch was directed at environmentally conscious people and especially parents… the only kid around was the young girl you see on my photo here.

She sat all by herself looking at the distant horizon, her gaze swimming above the adult buzz around her. The pure and yet knowing expression on her face that I have seen in so many children today, and her sweet smile when our eyes briefly met, seemed to represent each child today that’s facing an undefined future. And yet – besides this being the challenge of the young generation… couldn’t it just be the promise as well…? A future to which only the younger generations hold the key – and this with the help of the Universe?

Time to trust that any change can happen if we are ready to embrace it.

Website Development

The website development for Monkey Valley Resort is constantly advancing. I added a category “Photos” where we can add photos following specific events, where guests and visitors can see what’s up at Monkey Valley Resort; I invite you to go there and have a look at some photo impressions I took at the event yesterday. Unfortunately there was almost no light during the talk itself, so no ways to capture it with my digital camera.

I designed all photos to fit into a 800×600 px format, but have a little coding problem to solve – therefore the pictures are currently visible in a smaller size (6o%). Yet – here they are, straight after the event and inviting you to visit Monkey Valley Resort. By the way: kids are most welcome and you can watch over them while they have ample room to play, swim and run!

Why not visit Thorfynn’s Restaurant for a delicious Sunday roast with Life music?

I wasn’t surprised to see South Africa’s exciting young band “Hot Water” playing at the “Crowned Eagle” at Monkey Valley Resort for the launch of “Brave Green Kids” by Judy Sole… giving the golden sundowner atmosphere a specific touch with their distinctive South African sound – and this even when playing such comparatively ‘exotic’ instruments as the hang. The hang was developed in 2000 in Bern, Switzerland, and I remember playing it together with bandleader Donovan Copley’s parents in Monkey Valley’s famous TreeTops Conferencing Center – we were eleven hang players – certainly a record at the time!

While Hot Water is playing at Monkey Valley, Kirstenbosch Gardens and many Cape Town venues on a regular basis, the band has risen to fame well beyond South Africa’s boundaries and “…must easily be one of the most exciting musical projects to come out of South Africa…” as The Citizen writes.

Splashy Fen Festival likens them to Paul Simon and according to Sunday Independent they may just be “…the next big South African band.”

It’s that time of the year again where many couples plan to get married and are looking for the best Cape Town Wedding venue.

For me it’s specifically exciting this year as I have started a new project: a Wedding Website that will evolve into a Family Website. It’s a project I always wanted to do… now I can! And of course I will try to develop something new and original!

While I haven’t completed the website development for the new Monkey Valley Resort website yet due to some info that still needs to be supplied by the client  -  eg. Booking Button for integration into the website; the Wedding Brochure with Prices and Details as well as the Social Network integration details for Facebook, Twitter and Google +… – and while Monkey Valley Resort certainly is one of the most romantic and best Cape Town Wedding Venues especially if you love Nature, I look forward to doing this project in one of my favourite Cape Town Hotels with many happy memories: the elegant Vineyard Hotel in Claremont, Cape Town. Besides a very select interior design done with great taste and clearly an Art collectors’ eye, it features a most spectacular garden setup with sweeping views across perfect lawns with giant tortoises… lush waterways and lily ponds… and the backdrop of the mountain ranges in the back.

The first photo shoots have started… now we’re just waiting for the rains to stop so we can continue…

One of the last finishing touches for the brand-new website for Monkey Valley Resort will be the integration of a Booking Button by SiteMinder to put the reservation of Accommodation and Conferencing on automatic.

Once the Booking Button for Monkey Valley Resort has been integrated and a few other issues on my list are resolved, the website will be officially handed over… of course together with a walkthrough for the person responsible for new posts and a tutorial (part of which has already been delivered)… At that time, the first slide – which correctly announces the current website development on Semiomantics XO which stands for Excellence in Online Publishing – will be eliminated.

The ideal date would be the 11th November 2011 when the book “Brave Green Kids” by Judy Sole, Leader of the Green Party in South Africa, will be officially launched at the “Crowned Eagle” at Monkey Valley Resort!
