Britain’s Big Freeze continues

Britains big freeze continues with temperatures dropping to -22 Celsius at  night and is forecast to last into next week. Cold! For those trying to carry on and get to work its a real misery as joureys take far longer than normal. Many roads are treacherous. Transport services and goods deliveries have also been disrupted.

Freeze or Heatwave

The knockon effect of this cold spell can be felt almost everywhere, in agriculture, industry and sport. Farmers struggling to keep herds fed,  workers not been able to get into work, schools  closed and many sport venues cancelled.  Economically the whole of the country has been disrupted. Snow is only fun when you are well prepared to cope with the conditions.  Here in the U.K. we are definitely not prepared for such a big freeze as this. We freeze and yet in South Africa the British cricketers suffer in a heatwave of temperatures of over 40 Celsius.

Britain dips into conditions lower than the South Pole, others  bask on the beaches in soaring temperatures in a heatwave. Real extremes in the weather. The climate has certainly changed. The plants tell their own story too as they respond to the changes; global warming as predicted by the scientists is happening , whether man made or not, we do need to be prepared just like the good old fashioned boy scouts. Who knows what next week will bring.

Britain’s Big Freeze

The snow and cold weather grips the nation, with temperatures falling as low as -17C in some areas. Britains’ big freeze of 2010 is quite a contrast to other years when temperatures were so mild that a stroll along the beach was a pleasant experience. Today we stay huddled up indoors to keep warm, fires or central heating on and only a few brave folk venturing out on the nearly empty roads. Many main roads round here are passable, but require caution and very slow speeds, however, the minor roads are really treacherous. Ice is the main problem causing both people and cars to skid.

The cold weather is here to last for a few more days, so the weathermen tell us, creating problems for many citizens around the British Isles. This weather has not only hit Britain but also many countries in the northern hemisphere, France, Norway, Spain and central Europe to name a few, whilst the mediterranean countries enjoy warmer weathe than usual. I personally don’t remember us here in our part of the country having such a long, cold spell for many years. As a child we used to have winters like this, but over the past 20years or so winters round here have been reasonably mild. Is this the ‘extremes’ that we were warned about with the coming of the global warming?

WordPress Updates

Logging into my Author Blog today, the first thing I see that – after just a few days – the next WordPress 2.9. 1 update has been released! Now you’ve got to check what this entails and what implications it has on what you’ve set up so far. Some updates work sort of automatically through the Dashboard of your blog – others need a manual download to your harddrive and from there an upload to your server, overwriting the existing files. With slow Internet connections and really lousy lines down here in South Africa, this is a tedious job – but it has to be done.

Plugin Updates

It’s all a chain reaction: one update leads to the next… then a bug is being discovered and whoopsi! here comes the next update and so on.

I had 3 Plugin Updates in my Author Blog today – and one of them caused a mess… and it wasn’t until I investigated the issue with my code-spiffy friend from France, Laetitia Paris, that together with a lot of testing and thinking and swearing and drinking (virtual Champagne only of course!) we found the solution. We decided to share it with you, our loyal readers. It will save you time and frustrations….

Collapsing Categories Plugin – Problematic Update

Before writing my post this morning, I updated all my plugins, including the Collapsing Categories Plugin.

When I checked my published post, I suddenly discovered that, in the left sidebar widget where all my Categories were situated in a ‘collapsing’ manner, all posts of the corresponding category came with a red underline that exceded the frame of the widget. I had never seen this and first thought of Fontburner, that had caused us a lot of headaches in the past as well – but that wasn’t the reason. Now i wondered whether my site or line or ISP were caching and asked Laetitia – she saw the same thing. However, she did in Firefox and she didn’t in Internet Explorer. This alone is a nightmare at times – but at least we saw the same thing. Checking the Collpasing Categories Code for anything that indicated something ‘underlines’ lead to nothing as well.

So we discussed the possibilities and tested… and to cut the long story short: the solution is to go – under Settings – into your Collapsing Categories.

Here you highlight and copy the following:

border:0;

and then you paste it a bit further down into the code so you get the following picture:

#sidebar ul.collapsing.categories.list li.collapsing.categories.post {
text-indent:-1em;
padding-left:1em;
border:0;
margin:0 0 0 1em;}

Then save it all and the mess clears up like magic!

I really like my new Windows 7, its such an improvement on Windows Vista. Today a friend passed on a super tip that I would like to share. Ever heard of GodMode?

GodMode is a cool feature that allows you to see all the computer settings in one place, no more scrolling around to find what you need.

How to enable GodMode on Windows 7

To enable GodMode on Windows 7 (was also available on vista) create a new folder on your desktop and name it:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Magically you will see this icon appear.

GodMode

 Right click and open and you will see a wholelist of 276 items appear, a whole array of computer settings all in one place. Cool eh?

Preparing for MMX

All the hustle and bustle of Christmas 2009 is nearly all behind us and so we begin to look forward to and prepare for MMX, 2010, the New Year ahead and the begining of a  new decade.

Many of the large companies like Microsoft have already planned for the new year ahead with new edtions of popular products, for example: Microsoft Office 2010. We too in our own way plan the year ahead making plans for the future; re-designing, revamping, improving  and creating new products.

In our personal lives we often make New Years  resolutions: to better ourselves, go on a diet, go on holiday  giving ourselves new goals to drive us forwards, things to look forward to.

Zygmunt Bell in Krakow’s Wawel Cathedral…”Big Sig” still is where it was hung in 1521… it needs the strength of ten men to ring the giant bell every Christmas, New Year Day…

I really can’t believe how quickly this year, 2009, has flown by. We have just had our last Daily Online Training Call, and what a super call it was.

Christmas 2009

The flurries of snow turned into a blizzard overnight, but here by this morning we saw the snow slowly melting as the temperature increased to just over freezing. In our corner of the world we often escape the worst of the weather, however elsewhere heavy snowfalls in the U.K. have caused travel chaos, forced schools to shut and cut power to homes. Will we have a white Christmas? we will have to see as Christmas Day is still a week away.

Planning Ahead for 2010

Planning Ahead for 2010 first we really need to take stock of what happened in our business online in 2009.

Christmas 2009

It is just over a week to Christmas and we have had our first flurries of snow yesterday. Nothing settling as yet but who knows, maybe we will have an old fashioned white Christmas this year.

It’s such a busy time of year for most of us with all the festive preparations. Presents, cards, deorations, food shopping are just a few of the activities that occupy our minds these days. Shops over laden with goods, queues everywhere; tv’s pumping out the Christmas commercials, spend, spend, spend! buy, buy, buy! Let’s all be jolly, but who will pay the bills?

Is this what Christmas is all about, a time of excess and spending more can you can afford? Parents made to feel guilty if they can’t afford the latest hot toy for their little darling!

For me, Christmas means family, a wonderful excuse to get the family together again, exchange the latest news, hot gossip, jokes,  share a meal, a glass of two and above all to have FUN together! LAUGHTER! That’s the real JOY of Christmas.

year 2010 

As we prepare for the forthcoming festivities our thoughts extend also to the next year ahead – 2010 and what it holds for us all, for our families, friends and the world at large. The world seems to be in turmoil these days, a world out of balance:  everywhere chaos and change; the earth protesting,  factions at war, strikes,  and now even the members of the Climate Summit in Copenhagen cannot seem to come to a solid agreement on such an important issue as protecting our environment. Even if we cannot truly control what is happening in the world today, should we not sit down and just honestly re-think how we treat this earth that we rely on  and how we treat each other these days.  

Thinking of the year ahead and business matters, our last monthly Ycademy Seminar for 2009 was the preparation and extension of the Path to Profitability to 2010 and new products like the Semiomantics XO 2010.

Semionantics XO 2010

Semionantics XO 2010 is an amazing modified blog theme that requires no plugins. Any serious blogger knows what a pain these can be. With every update we encounter conflicts and some technical problems, even if they are just minor ones they are real time wasters when trying to solve the problem. Do we really need these updates so frequently? I, for one,  am not so sure. No plugins means we also use less of the valuable server resources we pay for, Semiomantics XO 2010 using 50% less memory than its earlier version. Things indeed should run better, faster and smoother.

 I am only too happy to acquire a plugin-free,  script.
