Is there a way for affordable DVD Packaging?

Well, there is the long way to elaborate all this in hundreds of little steps on Photoshop – that’s what I’ve learned and practised over quite a while based on studying the early Adobe Photoshop Bible 5 – and then there is today’s fast and spiffy way by using Actions or Action Scripts, where basically the whole process is extremely compressed into automatic processes with occasional ’stops’ to insert personalized data like a title, a name, a copyright… that deliver astonishing end products.

These Action Scripts allow even people who are no artists and who don’t intend to go that route… but who have equipped themselves properly with Photoshop and who wish to present their photos and images on Blogs and Websites in a professional and appealing way… to produce great results for say CD wrappers, attractive DVD Jewel cases and many other forms of packaging.

Of course, this is only possible because some professional Graphic Designer has gone the whole route of many little steps to create an Action Script – that basically recorded all these complex steps and wrapped it all up in a PRO Action product at a price or gives it away for ‘free’. Suddenly, anyone can get an eye-catching result at one or two mouse clicks. What’s important here is to find the real good actions between the many thousands out there on the Internet… but for this we have:

Nostalgia Bookcovers

Nostalgic Bookcovers seem to be an ongoing hit with a number of different groups of people – and I do understand why! If well done, meaning with lots of attention to detail, they have something precious and ‘whole’ about them… and if the content of the book itself is well-written, then the combination of valuable content and an exquisite book cover is a unique gift idea everybody simply loves, young and old…  even men. Ohhh… which gives me another idea… later!

Loving beautiful books myself and having crafted and illustrated a number of them in the ‘real’ world, I thought I’d venture into this area and design some Nostalgia Bookcovers the digital way – here’s my first ever example of its kind.

Nostalgia Bookcovers

To start off my Nostalgia Bookcovers, I was inspired by a beautifully crafted bookcover by a “Guttenberg”-something project… somewhere on the Internet; I don’t find it anymore. It had an old, handmade illustration on it featuring a little girl – a real nostalgic retro look.

In my imagination I saw my own hand-made illustrations – many of which I kept to this day – featuring on the covers… and one day they will, however, it seems my new computer and sophisticated programs don’t want to communicate with my older scanner anymore – they simply don’t click anymore . So this has to wait.

Meanwhile, I work with Digital Photographs from my meanwhile famous “Secret Garden”.

Everything on this book cover and those that will follow in future posts is originally crafted; after all these years with a ‘mouse’ it was quite an experience to go back and draw by hand using my little Bamboo tablet from WACOM… as I am still in camping-mode after heavy downpours destroyed part of my studio.

Global Sports offer one of the hottest products in our era of  fast mobility and people on the go: kicks, sneakers and blings.

However, despite a certain popularity in the normal world, Global Sports was literally non-existent on the Internet. . . until they got a Semiomantics Business setup…  which was soon upgraded to Semiomantics Ecommerce with the smashing Best Shopping module as featured in WP Best eShop. As their sales generated from their presence on the Internet continued to climb, they realized the need to even accelerate their rise to fame namely to:

• stay ahead of the competition,
• capture more Google Top 10 positions and keep them… and most importantly,
• double and triple their sales volume.

Ezine Advertsing

Today, you find Global Sports on most relevant keywords – and they are continuously building their Brand.

At the time, I created a series of ads to provide some affordable advertising for the Internet. To test our new Action Scripts as discussed in this week’s Photoshop Ycademy Workshops, I decided to go a step further and point out another interesting way of advertising: Ezine Advertising.

Ezine Advertising is a smart strategy to keep people ‘in the loop’ and above you see what my initial preparation for the cover (first picture) turns into… once rendered in Step 2.

Again, it is important to follow the instructions regarding the Action Script, keep the layers in good order in Step 1, and not to forget to save the results in clearly marked folders – especially the ‘rendered’ ones – to be found again at a mouseclick when a new client wants “something similar…”.

As we see on the screenshot, the keyword phrase  “Affordable DVD Packaging”  has not too many search returns however many ads – which is indicative. We reached our target very fast with 3/10 positions on Google Top 10 – in this case with yesterday’s article, which was carried up by sites of our Semiomantics Publishing Network.

Presenting Web Design Graphics

In today’s madly media oriented virtual world it’s important to integrate good quality pictures and images into our Websites and Blogs, ideally based on our own digital photography and/or Graphic Artwork.

Within that context and with improving Internet streaming and connectivities even down here in the sticks in South Africa, the ‘packaging’ of anything we present gains in importance. Just as in the ‘real’ world… the ‘look’ is what counts most. This means that we as Web Designers and Graphic Artists have to adapt our skills to be Presenting Web Design Graphics in a professional and appealing way.

Presenting Web Design Graphics can be done the long and more elaborate way – depending obviously on the effect you wish to achieve as some are really just done in a few mouse clicks if you know the brilliant tools in your Adobe Photoshop CS4 – but for those who want to present their photos and images in a clean and pleasant manner without having to dig through complex Photoshop Tutorials, there is a smart way saving lots of time: Actions or Action Scripts.

Well, it’s what today’s Pro’s use anyway… as time is money and why reinvent the wheel?

How to Create a Reflection

In my Photoshop Series on “How to Create a Reflection” in September 2009, I introduced you to the more complex route – although this one was easy enough.

In the above example I simply used an Action Script to create a Reflection. This example is a simple one and I would say I personally would do it just as fast the ‘normal’ route, however, when it comes to automating hundreds of steps for items we don’t necessarily do every single day… WOW! this is just Magic!

One point I want to emphasize though: we always need good material to work with – sharp big photos, good quality images. It’s jsut a rule and not to be disputed.

Photoshop Ycademy Workshops

In yesterday’s Photoshop Ycademy Workshops we looked into additional Action Scripts and did some Action Script Troubleshooting.

One important point to remember was to not change the image size until at the end. Don’t even try this! I did… and had a beautiful product at the end of Step 1 – however, there was no way to render it!

Why did this happen?

Dali Through My Eyes

I had a specific picture in mind, however, as the Artwork I wanted to integrate – Dali Through My Eyes – was of much smaller size than what was dictated by the Action Script, I just decreased its size so I had a perfect fit!  Well, so thought I !!!

But that made the rendering via the Action Script impossible and, seeing that I cannot enlargen my original Artwork without losing pixels and quality, I have to abandon the idea alltogether. Yeah… any Actions Pro may have a laugh here… but this is part of the learning curve and we will get there!

Of course, I could do it in the ‘old’ way – however… as we approach different markets now – including Printing – , we need BIG pictures of HIGH quality. It requires a different way of thinking and planning… and it’s very exciting!

For the time being, I tested another Action in terms of a Cast Shadow on that well intended DVD Cover… and, of course… that attractive reflection :)

In tonight’s Photoshop Ycademy Workshop we will look into ways of dealing with Portraits and Landscapes – so look into your image folders and have some good, big pictures ready to be ‘manipulated’ for better presentation within your websites and blogs.

And to answer your question: YES! I am and have always been a fan of that great Surrealist painter… Salvadore Dali!

Here are the latest results on Google Top 10 for “2010 Noordhoek Accommodation” which show that, within this short period of time and without the keywords within the domain name in any way, we now occupy 7/10 spots on page one on Google:

However, on the Internet there is no standstill; like on Noordhoek Beach we are constantly on shifting sands with high tide and low tide and lots of surprises inbetween! So we have to be flexible and teachable all the time to work on our continued success.

“Cup of Gold” is an interesting search term with a whopping 37,3 million returns on Google. . .  but what I found was not exactly what I was looking for, at least not within the very concise context I was planning for my article to feature my Cup of Gold Image.

“Cup of Gold” as to Wikipedia is John Steinbeck’s first novel… some historical fiction which was more or less based on “… the privateer Henry Morgan’s life and death. It centres on Morgan’s assault and sacking of the city of Panama, sometimes referred to as the ‘Cup of Gold’, and the woman fairer than the sun reputed to be found there.”

Reminds me that it’s a while since I read Steinbeck…

“Cup of Gold” is described by Susan F. Beegel as follows: “. . . From the mid-1650s through the 1660s, Henry Morgan, a pirate and outlaw of legendary viciousness, ruled the Spanis Main. Finding what you are not looking for and not knowledgeable about is always an exciting source for new ideas… at least for me :)

I will remember this when I write about “Obsession”. . . which of course brings me to fragrances… perfumes… and flowers in my garden! My preferred topic!

In fact, what I was looking for was at the bottom of  that Goolge Top 10 page:  “Cup of Gold Plant”. . . as “Cup of Gold” is the common name for Solandra Maxima!

Solandra Maxima! What an amazing flower! What an amazing fragrance… and yes, don’t eat this poison…

I’m happiest when discovering my magic garden, especially in the early morning hours when the first golden rays glide over the mountain tops and unveil the secrets of the new-born day, accompanied by the busy buzz of bees and birds and the beguiling fragrances of a softly rustling breeze.

Solandra Maxima – with 3,710.000 returns on Google – is a tropical plant that originated in Mexico, was brought as an ornamental to Hawai where it possibly got its common name “Cup fo Gold”…  and somehow this stunning vine with its large, leathery creamy-gold flowers marked by dark purple veins and exuding a strong scent between coconut and chamomile (my personal description), found its way to South Africa. I first saw it in the Company Gardens in Cape Town when I was a little girl… and then I planted it in my own garden!

The surprise of seeing it suddenly in full bloom in my secret jungle was yesterday’s gift – immediately shared in the Ycademy Seminar October 2009!

Some people punch “Accomodation Noordhoek” into the Search Engine when looking for Accommodation in Noordhoek – others may do it the other way round: Noordhoek Accommodation. Each gives us a different search return… and the art is to discover where there are the most searches and the least returns.

Voila – c’est tout… but what sounds so simple is an Art… a Science… and from large corporate companies to small businesses and private people: everybody is in the race of the big Internet Formula 1… and while the REAL Google AdSense game is for big pockets these days, it’s in reach of any ambitious entrepreneur on the Internet to get a Google Top 10 position with their website or blog. And to keep it. . .

Bianca Gubalke on Google Wave

Bianca Gubalke on Google Wave – I am excited about this future-oriented new Communication and Collaboration tool on the Web – and I thank the friend who invited me. As yes. . .  it needs an invitation… and it’s early days. However,  Google Wave can only be as good as the people who actually have it, set it up, test it, work with it and play with it. People like you and me who firstly create and then ride the Google Wave. . .

The Internet is a pretty wet affair… from surfing to waving. . . we stay in the waters and if I look outside it’s a wave all over, a curtain of a wave of pouring rain, day and night, since a week… where is our sunny, hot and simply stunning South African summer? A summer we love to spend on Noordhoek Beach as the kid below just a month or so ago. . . ?

Let’s quickly look at Google Wave. It has a simple layout consisting of 4 modules:

* Navigation in the left column, top – consider it your Inbox

* Contacts in the left column, bottom – sort of your Addressbook or List of Friends (with pictures)

* List of Active Waves in your Inbox – in the middle column

* New or Open Wave in the right column – here is where things happen, here you can write, comment, add images, respond via audio or video, add gadgets (like games, puzzles, ratings, conferences, Google Earth…)  and robots ( eg. for surveys amongst Wave collaborators).

If you are fortunate enough to get a Google Wave account, do what I did right away and check out the many short yet explicit videos that illustrate the many features – and then play with them!

As with any Social Network, you want to set up your Profile in a professional and branded way. Besides, Google is the Master of the Internet in a way and has found the many versions of YOU anyway – be it in form of Blogs, Websites and other Links.

My Profile about “Bianca Gubalke on Google Wave” is a reflection of what I set up on my general Bio and Profile HERE. If you wish to have a Profile that you can link to from everywhere on the Internet, register for a free account right there and I teach you how to have your own Google-efficient page. Once done, you never have to worry about it again. . . just do the occasional update. The difference here is that this page is under YOUR control – not that of any Social Network or other Program. Be and stay independent – as far as that’s possible on Web2.0.

What still needs to be added is my Picasa Album, which I will do in the near future – then it’s all about the Wave!

What do you do on Google Wave?

A good question: What do you do on Google Wave?

Google Wave is still in a development stage and I assume that those who are fortunate enough to test it right now will provide lots of feedback and valuable input for improvements and adaptations to common needs.

Once the excitement of the new trend is over, I could imagine a very useful tool to work directly on projects with ones’ collaborators and partners from anywhere in the world. This is the thrilling concept behind it as far as I am concerned. If one can stop the spam before it starts and really work within an open yet private and respected environment – that would be perfect!

Here are just a few Benefits that simply trigger faster Action more often:

* The moment someone comes online, one would know through the green mark. Action!

* The moment a wave is updated or gets a new comment, one would know and be able to check immediately without losing time. Action!

* If something needs commenting – it’s instant, whether in the open or in form of private replies.

* If something needs the direct contact – say a document or article needs to be discussed in real time – voila! Let’s talk or even start a conference! Instant Action!

These are amazing possibilities saving  time and making teamwork faster, smoother and more efficient – not to speak about excluding misunderstandings right away through immediate interaction.
What always amazes me with Google is the amount of foresight and preparation at the highest levels. But then if not them… who else could deliver at that level in the virtual world?

So let’s learn all about the new tool and expect lots more to be coming from Google Wave in the future!
