Life in a Day Project Mantis

Time to continue my account of my contribution to Ridley Scott and Kevin MacDonald’s documentary experiment Life in a Day with Project Mantis.

It all started with a ray of sunshine, a digital camera and… the call of the mantis! And of course, all this happened on 24 July 2010. The . . .  ‘pretext’ .

For slow lines I recommend to first download … and then watch it to appreciate that meditative aspect that was so special and unique with what happened. And watch your projections and expectations based on your own personal life story! And remember… it was just a handheld digital photo camera…

Life in a Day Project Mantis

Life in a Day Project Mantis resonnates very much with the futuristic approach the filmmakers have in mind – well, no important movie Ridley Scott ever made doesn’t have it… I was thinking about it when driving down to Cape Point, South Africa, yesterday. A spectacularly beautiful Cape fynbos scenery exploding with early spring colors and bordering on the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean around me and my favourite Vangelis playing, including many Bladerunner themes. Pictures arising and interblending with the NOW. The Beauty. The Vision. The Stillness.

Life in a Day in 50 Years

If Life in a Day will be watched in 50 years… the Honey Bee may no longer be around. Its population is dwindling dramatically everywhere… and only few know that besides gifting us with delicious and nutritionally rich honey, the honey bee is the most important pollinator of many crops. This also means that with the extinction of the honey bee much more will go. Perhaps we humans will be gone? Unless we are living on even more genetically manipulated and artificial food than we already do today?

Time to… die?

No.

Life in a Day Meditation

Life in a Day Project Mantis is a meditation for today. For finding Order within Chaos. For Stillness. For Change.

Moving from without to within.

Naturally, the mantis – being a predator and carnivorous – would have annihilated the honey bee with a single bite and devoured it… like a reflex… just as anything we want, the eternal more… Take it and next!

But to my own amazement the result was quite a different one while I was holding my breath to keep the camera still! I won’t tell you – watch it and watch your own preconceived thoughts and, especially, your emotions. But be still. Take these 5 short minutes to just … BEE!

Which brings me back to Krishnamurti and one of his critical questions: “Can the mind observe without memory and time?”

He says yes… but only if the mind is completely still. Stillness is not acquired; it comes naturally when we have order.

Observing without conflict… without disorder… without division – that’s Meditation.

Life in a Day Project

Why participate in the Life in a Day Project – a very ambitious experiment using user-generated video clips on Google owned YouTube produced by cinematographic icon Sir Ridley Scott and directed by young Oscar-winning Kevin MacDonald?

Of course, with such names cinematic master pieces like “Bladerunner” … and recently  “Robin Hood” … and “The Last King of Scotland” come alive.

Magical images! Brilliant sound tracks that give you goosebumps! Magnificent performances with roles played to perfection… and wouldn’t it be something to just try and aspire to be or become part of a project that just has to be superb given the reputation… the authority behind it? Standing for quality, perfection, creativity, vision and simply… Magic?

And all you need is a digital camera and yourself. Your creativity.

A Dream in a perfect world…

A Challenge …

A Day… ONE day … the 24th July 2010… perhaps a historic day to be… history in the making… a buzz to be part of?

Or is the day by itself the ‘buzz’? What you make of the day? And shouldn’t you make each day a buzz? Shouldn’t we?

Life in a Day is as We are…

Life in a Day Project

Why not participate in the Life in a Day Project – a smart and uniquely cash-oriented stroke directed by Internet Advertising monolith Google… pulling the strings of this global orchestra via YouTube with psychological precision… counting on the virtual world’s hunger for a minute of glory… as Internet users from all backgrounds and from anywhere on the planet enthusiastically submit their contributions? Their Life in a Day on 24 July 2010? Their Life live?

And while the string pullers increase their fame, their bank account and their power… what’s ‘in it for them’? The normal people – yet in this case the ‘creators’?

The ‘donors’… ?

The hope of being included.

The honor of being part of something big where the sum of the parts is more. Much more…

Stepping into the legendary glow of the stars.

Being a line in the credits.

And a slight… a very slight chance of receiving possibly one of only 20 tickets to the 2011 Sundance Film Festival when this project – the Life in a Day Documentary – will be officially launched.

But why even ask or question as the Internet is FREE! Isn’t it?

Or is it Curiosity?

What will have become of their ‘life’ within this project? A reflection? A projection? A sound? A thought? A breath? Beyond consideration? A void?

Could it be the need of being part of a grandiose Team that stimulates the best within us to rise and deliver excellence… as well?

But then… where is the balance in the Giving and the Taking?

Is the Internet eating its own children?

Life in a Day – The Buzz

And then… who created the Buzz for Life in a Day in the first place?

The producer Sir Ridley Scott?

The director Kevin MacDonald?

Google?

YouTube?

Life in a Day – Make Your Own Choice

Whether it’s Life in a Day or any day in our lives… what counts is that you are aware and awake like a warrior… and that you make your own choice. For your own reasons. And live it with full Intent… with Passion.

That’s what I do… and I lived pure Magic on that 24th July 2010… Whether it’s part of the ‘Life in a Day Project’ will remain to be seen… but it contained all that makes a day unique: excitement, suspense, surprise, love, laughter and lots of joy! The difference here was: I recorded it.

Life in a Day

Life in a Day turns to pure bliss when the sun is shining after icecold, stormy, gloomy winter days. Here’s a republication of my article on 18th July that got lost in the roll-back after migration of this blog to a larger server, a server with higher streaming capacities due to increased work with digital media.

With the creation of the iconic classic “Bladerunner” – see my film review HERE – Film Director Sir Ridley Scott has moved right to the top of my list of favorites in terms of movie production.

He was far ahead of time then… and he again proves to be a visionary to use the Internet to launch a highly interesting initiative on YouTube: a historic global experiment to create the world’s largest user-generated feature film: a documentary, shot in a single day, by you. On July 24, you have 24 hours to capture a glimpse of your life on camera. The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into an experimental documentary film, executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald.

“No excuses” Scott says…”you’ve all got a digital camera.”

Right.

Now let’s see, how much Life there is in a Day.

Website Publishing

As said above, this was written on 18th July 2010 – meanwhile I got immersed in this exciting documentary on a global scale using YouTube as a vehicle… and it was a unique journey into the Mysteries of a day as you will see in my articles over the next days… I am using Website Publishing to tell my story of that day… additionally to the Video Trilogy I created as a contribution.

So exciting how many people from all around the world were motivated and show a glimpse within their 24 hours of Life in a Day – whether with professional video equipment, a normal standard digital camera (as I did with my simple NIKON Coolpix P90), or their iPhone or even webcam!Something anyone has these days…

“No excuses” said Scott!

2011 Sundance Film Festival

These people were not driven by financial considerations as there’s nothing to be earned – except being a name in the long line of credits of the final product… and the few best of the best being invited to the 2011 Sundance film Festival where the documentary will be launched…

But what a totally amazing Vision and Concept – I just love it and wanted to be part of this!

Movies are like a fever… and having been forced to be ‘abstinent’ for such a long time, it grabbed me again from head to toe!

No music allowed due to copyright issues… just original sounds.
