Premiere Pro or AVID

As I have to get a completely new system with more RAM and punch to handle especially future Video production esp. as we are integrating more and more Media into our online website developments, I asked a close friend who is a Master Editor who trained professional editors for the German film- and movie industry, what he would suggest. He immediately advised to get AVID as “…it’s the industry standard around the world.  That’s what professional editors and post production houses work with today. ”

Hmmm. I must just have missed the beginnings of AVID when I left Europe to build a new future back home, in South Africa, as from mid 1995. Apparently the time when AVID as the first NLE achieved dominance in the market place and established itself as “the” brand. According to Mark Raudonis, “… AVID’s were universally adopted by any editor doing a film finish. Obviously, these were the cream of the crop of the industry’s talent.”

So I have to catch-up and make some serious decisions especially as AVID comes at quite a steep cost. Given the fact that I actually enjoy working on ADOBE Premiere very much, just being immensely handicapped by limited memory until I get my new machine, but that my future vision rotates around Media production, this needs some serious research and thought.

Interestingly, I see and hear from various sources including Cape Town professionals and Filmmakers’ Forums that ADOBE is being prefered and “… better value for money”. In a way, they put it down to personal taste – like “Cola vs Pepsi”. This all sounds quite controversial, although I get the impression that AVID is better, faster, more feature-rich and the professional standard, but definitely much more expensive and a steeper learning curve. There is some eye-opening discussion – also with some reference to pricing – in this FORUM. I do not know whether these answers came mainly from consumers of professionals. But it’s intrigueing… and if there’s anyone out there using either Premiere or AVID for their professional filmwork, I would appreciate some feedback.

Premiere Pro or AVID

So there’s quite some (recent) discussion as to whether one should be choosing  “Premiere Pro or AVID” on the Internet when checking it on Google.  As FCP is no option anymore, at least not now, the question is what we plan to do in terms of video editing: is it just for fun or do we have serious intentions to produce on a professional level. A good editor will certainly get good results on either but may have access to many more additional tools in an Editing Studio than a private person, however, from what I read it is worth looking at the AVID Media Composer and getting the hand on the trial version to see what it offers. There is quite some comprehensive setup – also for sound – and I personally like the look of it. Hopefully, I can find a machine in Cape Town just to get the touch & feel of it too and have a chat with the editior working on it. If it’s not for now, it can be part of the plan and once the right jobs come in the investment will be justified.

However… if I can achieve good results with ADOBE Premiere that would just be perfect! One just never knows until looking at things in depth, comparing them and knowing one’s purpose and – means!

And at the end of the day I like a good glass of fresh, pure water!

Facebook Fanpage

Creating a Facebook Fanpage from our WordPress has become possible and, accordingly, this month’s (current) Ycademy Seminar November 2011 focuses on setting up the Best WP based Facebook Fanpage based on our purpose and online media marketing requirements.

The question to ask ourselves is: “Who would we like to attract… where… how… and why?” and definitely, we would only want to ‘talk’ to serious people who have an interest in what we are doing, offering or showing them and from where we can expect some interesting ‘conversation’. I am still amazed how this form of terminology is being translated and adapted to a modern online format – but since this is fast becoming the norm, we’ve got to learn the language and be … ‘cool’. LOL

How do we do this – especially if we don’t have the time nor the interest of hanging out on Social Networks all day long as we are busy doing our real business – in my case Web Design and Media related stuff that needs absolute focus, concentration and trips in the ‘real’ world without even a smartphone or any other form of line to attach me … duuuh, which Aquarius likes that anyway???

Talking Facebook Fanpage right now, this is what we are elaborating right now. . . and what you see above is my so-called “Reveal Page”.

What does this mean?

It simply means that only people who have clicked on “Like” get the Inside Story! To others this remains hidden… So while online marketing remains a numbers game at the end of the day, this kind of approach definitely puts quality (meaning the quality of an online relationship…) above quantity.

Having spent some time on Social Networks over the past 2 months or so, and having built some contact of value… I can say, this is what I ‘like’.

Web Design with Passion

My Author Blog Bianca Gubalke stands for “Web Design with Passion” which obviously encompasses many areas of interest… be it Web Development, Web Design, Media Design, Photography, Graphic Design, Editing and Publishing to name the main categories. Once the Facebook Fanpage has been ‘liked’, these categories can be directly accessed and conversation can begin.

The new Monkey Valley Resort website development nears its completion!

The integration of the Booking System at Monkey Valley Resort seems to be more complex than expected; accordingly, I still wait for the integration link to finish off the website and take off the front slider that points out that this is a website built on a WP based Semiomantics XO – the best script out there when it comes to visibility on Google!

Obviously, it’s then a matter of doing regular editing and publishing of good original content to keep the positions in the keyword areas targeted; however, from the results seen so far – be it for the Best Cape Town Conferencing Venue, the Best Cape Town Weddings, Thorfynn’s Restaurant Christmas Lunch or the New Year’s Eve Spectacular or Monkey Valley Resort – well, as the results clearly have shown, the initial investment in the right website has paid off manyfold! And this before its completion!

Semiomantics Website or Google Ads

Either you ensure your presence on Google top rankings by regular, daily Google ads – which is quite costly given the fact that you can’t go far even with $50 a day given the constantly rising cost – that’s dependancy short-term and long-term – or you invest once in the right Script and capture top entries on Google Top 10 on your desired keywords.

Monkey Valley Resort has made a smart choice with their new Semiomantics Website… it has paid off right from the start… and noone stops anyone from adding Google Ads… but now it’s a choice depending on one’s budget, it’s no longer a must. Be on the smart side of Internet Marketing; invest in an attractive and search engine efficient Semiomantics Website!

No Source Editing with Windows Live Mail

There is no email source editing on Windows Live Mail. What a deception for all Windows 7 users!

It seems that Microsoft sacrificed this useful feature to enable photo mailing.

Workaround to Edit Email Source in Windows 7

Having gone through all options and recommendations of the Microsoft savvy community, from copy paste, mailing with another device and more, I finally have opted to simply use Windows Mail from Vista for sending and receiving mails and to leave Live Mail the default for Photo Mailing.

The advantage of this solution is that you will find all your mail rules and settings automatically again (if you have upgraded from Windows Vista).

Install Windows Mail on Windows 7

There is an easy way. Windows Mail comes bundled with Windows 7 but you cannot run it.

Interestingly all the download sites for the famous Windows Mail zip have taken off the file, while the corresponding posts are still referenced. Maybe Microsoft has a claim for illegal distribution of their software.

1. You can however do the following. Zip up your Windows Mail Folder on Windows Vista.

2. Rename the Windows Mail Folder in Windows 7 to Windows Mail Old.

3. Unzip the zip into Windows 7.

4. Pin the .exe file to the Start Menu and fire up your Windows Mail :-).

The Solution of Last Resort

Search Google for a File called Windows-Mail-Vista.zip. If you are lucky you still find it somewhere …

With the Social Media Marketing buzz reaching peak levels in the virtual world… and the fierce competition – Google + – having come up with a social media platform I personally really like – Facebook is releasing its new Timeline and I’ve just got my head around setting up the new Facebook Timeline Profile – here’s a screenshot:

The New Facebook Timeline Profile features a bigger picture at the top with a very smooth and simple upload facility. The little icon to the left sits basically on top of it. As I did not want the face again, I added an icon first… see screenshot below – however, this little icon accompanies each post and, as this face is sort of known already and basically my brand, I gave it a slightly different shape and uploaded it. That it would come up large in 1 : 1 format on the resulting action was quite a surpise, but one will get used to this! In any case, everything is much better integrated as far as I can see.

To the far right, top, you see the timeline… and depending on when your online autobiography starts, that’s as far as it goes down. You can now go back in time and add comments, pictures, documents – whatever. We are writing our life story here – well, if that was my intention I would have to sit here for quite a while – but those who have been active on Facebook for a while will love this feature. It’s much more organized for sure and certainly a brilliant move – for Facebook.

This Facebook page gives us a nice opportunity on a privileged spot to present who we are, show whatever we wish to be seen as or to simply give people an idea as to what our business is about.

In my case it’s Web Design with Passion – that’s what I stand for with all that’s connected to it: the Discussion and Research with the Customer, the entire Project Management, some Code, the entire Web Design including Media, Editing and SEO efficient Online Publishing… and all this on WP based Semiomantics Scripts of course. This means Google Top 10 positions and exposure on Social Networks.

Tip: make sure you go through your settings on Facebook to control who and what you allow.

Ycademy Online Seminars in October 2009

October will be a busy month, first due to the release of Windows 7 in the USA and then because we will run daily sessions on Web Design and Image Editing throughout the month.

Windows 7 Online Seminar

Windows 7 Ultimate

The windows 7 Special Seminar is designed for all Windows Vista users. The Goal is to upgrade Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.

The upgrade session will take place on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8 pm GMT (London Time), where we will initiate the upgrade and then let run the Windows 7 install over night. The upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 takes from a few hours to 15 hours in the case of my main system; you will not have to intervene during that time but you will neither be able to use your computer during the upgrade.

On Saturday, October 17 at 1 pm GMT we will meet to test the system and to install Windows Mail as the case may be, before walking through the system to familiarize with the new features. This will take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.

Web Design and Editing Seminar

The regular monthly Ycademy Online Seminar will deal with advanced Web Design Elements and Editing. The schedule will be posted later.We also will insert a section about: Organising your Data with Windows 7 and Working with Windows 7.

Almost a year ago, I wrote about the Arum Lily Frog – Hyperolius horstockii – and how much I wished to spot it! Yesterday, a tiny arum lily frog surprised us at the Photo Seminar attended by Ycademy Seminar participants from all over the world – strictly online of course!

Curiosity won over suspicion as the beautiful creature emerged from the depth of the calice of a white arum lily in my traditional monthly Ycademy Seminar bouquet that always features flowers from my garden in Noordhoek, South Africa.

Having an Arum Lily Frog at the Photo Seminar gave me an instant opportunity to capture the little visitor with my digital camera (NIKON Coolpix P90)… and then applying the newly learned skills of OnOne Professional Tools as part of our Adobe Photoshop photo and image editing equipment.

The Importance of Seeing beyond the Photo

My article about “The Importance of Seeing beyond the Photo” suddenly got an additional dimension: the arum lily frog perspective! The knowledge and content taught in terms of Photo Editing and Photo Publishing were exhilarating as to the possibilities we have for our photo post-production, allowing us to compensate for the short-comings of our low-end cameras that just cannot compare with top professional digital camera equipment when it comes to traditonal offline printing.

It was – as always – so much that it could make you dizzy and one could easily get lost between Greek walls and British bumble-bees. Finally, the traffic chaos on Google Top 10 after us publishing images on our WordPress Blogs was just too much: our little visitor prefered to withdraw from the high-tech world … while keeping an eye on me … just in case!

Publishing Photos on Google Top 10

Publishing Photos on Google Top 10  convinced the Arum Lily Frog that it had indeed joined the best WordPress Theme Team in the world: Semiomantics.

Time to enjoy the last rays of the setting Noordhoek winter sun illuminating the arum lily… time to rest before the next adventure…

Publishing Photos on Google Top 10 was the crowning moment of last month’s Ycademy Seminar which focused entirely on smart Image Editing and targeted Image Publishing on WordPress based Semiomantics Websites and Blogs. Results were almost instant for the entire Seminar Team – with top rankings on Google ahead of 19,300,000 search returns – as can be seen on the below screenshot taken just a few moments after publishing my image here on my Author Blog:

Publishing Photos on Google Top 10 is becoming an increasingly important target following the rapid online trend where the emphasis is on media, media design, media publishing and anything to do with images, photos, videos and the visual in general. As offline so online one could say… and while the above results are in constant flux all the time, we have once again prooved the high performance of the best WP based theme in connection with Semiomantics Web Design!

Nobody takes outstanding photos all the time; not even the top professional! The Importance of Seeing beyond the Photo to me lies in seeing the image before we actually take it – just like the true artist painter has an inner vision of what he wants to project onto the canvas with colors… and being an artist myself I know about the inner struggle of getting close to that picture… and how hard it actually is to capture it… if at all!

Coming back to Digital Photography – the topic of this month’s Ycademy Seminar – the fact is that very often we sort of rush into a picture – be it for lack of time or to just quickly catch that fleeting image as we pass in order to remember it… brief: we see something … something beyond the photo we actually carry home. So while the imperfect  if not lousy picture – yet enhanced by our personal experience and vision – may be one thing, we now have to translate it into something that talks, that’s dramatic, expressive or beautiful to look at for others.

That’s when Post-Editing comes into play, be it with all the brilliant tools Adobe Photoshop has to offer or, to add even more sophistication and ease, OnOne Professional Tools.

That’s where the top professional distinguishes himself: pre-editing by composing the perfect image he wants to take – either by taking the right time in any natural environment or by including the right setup for studio shots where he would need say the make-up, styling and especially the lighting of a model with or without background. After careful selection of certain photos from the whole lot – this will then be followed by post-editing, applying certain filters, masks and effects… often the photographer’s secret ‘brand’ or the studio-brand… just as we have the possibility to do with our post-editing tools. It’s all about educating the eye, having a feeling for trends and the taste of the time and then knowing how to use our camera and post-editing tools.

The Importance of Seeing beyond the Photo

The untouched Greek seascape presented to us at the Ycademy Seminar for personal enhancement (see below) is a perfect example to demonstrate the Importance of seeing beyond the Photo.

Here we have the photographer capturing a subtle Greek sunset casting a flat mirror onto ink-colored water with tiny silhouettes of boats at the rosy horizon and flanked bottom left and right by dark memories of land. It’s the photographer’s memory… which can be improved technically up to a certain point… and this was part of the exercise yesterday.

But then there is my instant inner vision, inner interpretation… based on my own memories of light, water and sea and especially flying fish during my windsurfing and diving times in the Philippines that let me immediately see something else… and while improving certain issues – like the horizon, higher tonal range and sharpness etc – I was completely carried away expressing what I saw in this photo… or rather beyond this photo -, giving it my personal interpretation and touch – and these post-editing tools are perfect to do so. The result was “Anchovies Dream” above! it may please others or not – but it’s filled with my own memories… and I went back in time and I was there again… and when I look at the image I see and remember it all … the schools of flying fish, the light, islands at the distant horizon, the transparency of the sea around coral reefs set against the mystery of dark night-dives… and all beyond the volcano’s eye…

Mastering the Technique of Post-Editing Tools

There’s a clear difference between ‘playing around’ with effects and Mastering the Technique of Post-Editing Tools. However, it helps to get familiar with tools and their possibilities to then apply the correct tools to bring alive the inner Vision.

Joy is important and furthers Creativity, taking away the fear of all that complex and daunting ‘technical stuff’. So start with the first approach to see and understand what each filter or mask does – taking good notes of each ‘effect’ – and then using each very sparcely but extremely targeted to help define the photo or image in the way you see, feel and know it inside… or to simply present better photos and higher quality images.

Each picture should have a soul – that’s the way it communicates, touches and … ‘talks’.

“How to Edit and Publish Digital Photos” is the focus of the Ycademy Online Seminar in July.

Taking photos has become a relatively easy and cheap task with the proliferation of accessible digital cameras and mobile devices, such as smart-phones and tablets. Of course the quality of the pictures varies in function of the quality of the camera and the skill of the photographer. Some of the shortcomings can be compensated by improving skills and post editing.

The Seminar will deal with editing digital photos using namely Photoshop and OnOne Professional Photo Tools.

Editingand post editing have a lot to do with the purpose of the image as well as on the destination platform. We will look into different options and detail specific requirements for the mobile web.

The above sample shows that editing makes the image heavier! The more filters, masks and brushes we apply the more Kb we ad and the slower the image will load once on the site. Here it is getting interesting: the above image counts 124 Kb as shot (it has just been cropped to 300 pixels wide), then we have added 29 px while editing and in the end reduced the JPEG quality to end up with a final 27 Kb, i.e. 2 Kb less than what we added by editing, amd yet, the image is more dynamix, vibrant and sharper.

In order to use editing tools efficiently, we must acquire some knowledge about the different filters and masks. We need to learn some terminology and we need to learn to translate the desired results into professional lingo, so that we use the appropriate tool to achieve the desired result.

The absence of such knowledge results in a “roulette approach” and therefore to unpredictable results and bloated file sizes.

Publishing Images and Photos with Semiomantics XO on WordPress

With WordPress 3 many new features became available and Semiomantics exploits them with the recent XO versions. In as much as images, videos and galleries are concerned, XO provides special post formates which are ideal for Media Publishng.

We will explain the custom formates and how to create a specific media feed stream throughout an XO publishing Network.

To apply the new skills and knowledge, we will build a photo content management system on XO. To anticipate the work and to make the best use of the time we dispose of, we will start building the Photo Site during the 2 Pre-Seminar calls on Tuesday and Thursday next. During these two sessions we will namely focus on customization and design of the XO to end up with a photo site which will provide multiple media streams to be used on other sites of the network.

If you refer to books within your articles on a rather regular basis, you may want to become an Amazon Affiliate and then link from your recommended literature on your website directly to your Amazon Shop. This means that in case a reader follows your recommendation and buys the book (or any other product) you collect a small commission – which is just fair for the information you may be providing.

To explain the steps to you, I will use the example below on the new website “Psychic Readings Online“, where author Delia O’Riordan recommends the book “The Elephant Whisperer” – which is linked to her Amazon Shop. Try it and you see what I mean.

However, the fact is that many people struggle with the question of “How to insert a Product from Amazon on a Blog”; therefore, here’s an explicit Tutorial on how to do this, using the above example.

How to insert a Product from Amazon on your Blog

The first step before you wonder as to how to insert a product from Amazon on your Blog is that you want to become an Amazon Affiliate by just going to their website and signing up for the Amazon Affiliate Program.

What is important here is that you keep the welcome information – including your username/email address and password – and important amazon links in your files. You will need those to login.

The Link you want to use for our exercise here is this one HERE. Just click this hyperlink and check it in your browser. You will use it in a minute.

Now use your Login data (email/password) to login… and you come to the AmazonAffiliates Page:

On top left you will see your personal credentials; take note of those!

Now you simply hit on Links & Banners at the top left bar and, on the menu that opens on the left, select PRODUCT LINKS.

You can now do a quick and easy search for your product and click on GO to get the internal amazon search engine moving.

The next page that opens shows the searched Book with Author and price information etc… a real nice big picture by the way…:

The next step is to click, top left, on LINK TO THIS PAGE.

You now get a popup to “Customize and Get HTML”… so here you can now adapt the colors of background and fonts according to your preferred color scheme to match that on your website… and then choose to set up your ad with picture or only text. As I prefer to work with large pictures, I selected the larger picture of the book before  (right-click/save as) and then I personally select “Text Only” and then highlight the HTML Code you see highlighted on the picture as below:

Important: what we will need to hyperlink our own image of the selected product is only the Link itself (http://…………………..) – basically what’s between the quotes “………….. and ………..” Make sure you grab the whole code. Ideally, copy/paste it on Notepad or PSpad and now go to your Semiomantics XO Dashboard or other editor and, in here, to the article you were writing and where you now want to insert the picture and hyperlink it via your Amazon Affiliates Link to your Amazon Shop.

The next step therefore is to insert the image within your post… and when typing in the various parameters (Edit Image), insert the above Link (full URL) under “Link URL” as you see on the below image – and Update.

Tip: click on None and the field for the URL is empty; so just paste the Amazon URL in here:

Here’s a parenthesis: nothing on the Internet is perfect; we’ve got to live with this. There are no guarantees that these links always work – so test them first. By now, if someone hits on the image on your blog, the Amazon product page with “The Elephant Whisperer” should open immediately. Always check the link in your browser and see that it carries your affiliate code.

Alternatively – or additionally – you can advise readers to click HERE and then hyperlink HERE with your Amazon Affiliates Link to your Shop as you see below. Do not type the Link in the text of your post, just do it as I show you here on this line.

That’s it! Once you are sure you inserted all the correct links, click on publish and check your article. Look at it like a visitor or reader and click on the Image – as well as the hyperlink HERE – and see that both bring you safely to the product you are promoting via your Amazon Affiliate Link, in this case “The Elephant Whisperer”.

Please note that Amazon does change things from time to time, but the basic principles provided here should help you find your way easily through.

To hyperlink the word HERE in a text, you need to first highlight (select) the word HERE (so it turns blue) and then you click on the hyperlink icon in the Editor as explained above. Just fill in the details, especially the link itself – in this case the Amazon Affiliate Link leading to a book – and save/update. The important thing here is that you want to always test your links once you have published the post: do they really open the targeted page?

If this is not the case, check the link you inserted again. If you missed a dot so to speak, your link won’t open. Be precise!
