Build your Social Network Publishing Network

Social Network Publishing is task which aims to reach out for users of social networks by making valuable content available in social networks. In other terms, we aim to become visible on the search results inside Social Networks.

Social Networks vs. Google

In general as a web publisher we make our content available to the public and hence to search engines, such as Google. Google does not reflect however the content produced inside Social Networks. Social Networks run their own internal search engines paired with particular sets of filters, such as geo-targeting, age groups, language and more. To become visible on search results within Social Networks, content must be published and made available inside the social networks… at least that’s what most people may think.

We will show you here below that this is not the absolute truth of the story.

Google Top 10 and Facebook

During the past 12 months Facebook has opened it’s closed house to many ‘external sources’ one of them being external search engines; MySpace has had a web search function much earlier.

External Web search can now be found in Facebook and it is interesting to compare search results.

In Facebook we find Bing powered Search results (of course, since Microsoft has invested over $200 million in Facebook):

Good Morning from Noordhoek… with the first rays of a glorious sun gently touching Chapman’s Peak and gliding down the slopes of the majestic mountain… my garden still enveloped in shadows and awakening! May this be the promise of yet another day filled with joy and laughter for you!

This very early “Good Morning from Noordhoek” greeting was taken when I did some sound recordings in my garden capturing the spectacular concerto of birds, hadidas, Egyptian geese, a crow, guinea fowel, jubilant roosters, even a wild peacock and more… besides a very loud surf reverberating all the way up the mountain from the Atlantic Ocean.

Yet the sea was calm… and it still is as I write these lines.

Here’s to a splendid Saturday … and wishing our Canadian friends “Happy Thanksgiving”! In a way, my daily little cheer message is jsut that: a daily Thanksgiving!

Creating a Static Background on a blog

A whole training call focused on resizing a large background image in order to use it as a static background on a blog. An image was provided for this purpose, a photo of the ‘Marble Stadium in Athens’.

The workshop gave the participants the opportunity to put into practice the instruction on resizing the image and also work with the stylesheet to make the neccessary changes to obtain a result.

Once the concept is understood then any image can be utilised as a static background, as in this example below of a grunge background incorporated in Yorgo’s design blog.

Web Design Workshop 17 – Resizing Large Background Image

Web Design Workshop 17 follows Workshop 16 where we discussed scrolling content over fixed backgrounds. Using large images and pictures as backgrounds, we need to pay particular attention to the concerned file size.

For the purpose of this exercise let’s use a photograph of the Marble Stadium which has been constructed for the 1896 Olympics in Athens.

The original file is quite large with 2048 x 1536 pixels. This is the dimension we want to load to the Semiomantics XO as background image to allow visitors using resolutions up to 2048 to have a background in one piece.

A picture of this dimension comes usually with 3.5 to 4.5 MB from the camera to the computer.

Download Background Image

Download the image HERE. It is already reduced to about 800 KB, which is still much too big to serve as a background.

Save to disk and decompress the file.

Edit the image in Gimp or Photoshop

First let’s give it a long shut and save with 20% quality settings, and all other parameters optimized for smallest file output:

With both above settings you end up with a weight of about 105 KB.

How about reducing further? Yes, we can!

Use a blur filter such as Gauss set to 2.5 and you end up with 62 KB only; see the detail:

Of course this blur and reduction of quality may be extreme; however a blur factor of 0.5 to 1.00 could make sense as blur optically sends the background back and helps to put more emphasis on the foreground (your content) provided your content images are sharp …:-).

Wow, this his is a lean 79 KB! Click a few times on the pic till you get full size.

Apply the Background to the Site

Let’s load the image to our image folder in the Semiomantics XO theme folder and adapt the style sheet.

My image is called marble1300.jpg and I want it to be fixed so that the content can scroll over it:

This is what I get on my 1680 x 1050 resolution monitor (click to view in overlay):

As I would like to see more of the stadium and place my site “into” the stadium, I cut off 250 pixels about from the top of the image whic reduces the image size by a few pixels and I reload it to get my final result:

Background Image size 2048 x 1300 pixels and 76.1 KB, that’s over 10 times lighter than the original.

The Importance of Daily Postings – not necessarily long but regular, meaningful and contextual articles that is – may not be under-estimated especially in the early times of a new CMS.

We monitor the performance of the websites and blogs created on our WP based Semiomantics Scripts very closely to ensure the customer – in this case Magnetic Transport Surplus in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines – has properly understood and applies the correct basic principles in terms of Online Editing and Online Publishing and – based on his efforts – gets the corresponding exposure on search engines, i.e. Traffic to his targeted keywords and topics of interest. Traffic translates into inquiries, direct communication between seller and potential buyer – and, eventually sales.The more Traffic, the more Conversion – that’s simple mathematics.

The Importance of Daily Postings and Google

So how are the Importance of Daily Postings and Google connected?

Simple: search engine spyders need fresh, daily content – it’s what fuels them, what gets them excited, what makes them tick so to speak! They crawl all the time across the web looking for that: fresh content! Hungry monsters they are… but they reward us by positioning our posts where we target… at least with the right script and optimization! While they cannot evaluate the quality of the content, they look for certain ‘hooks’ and, once satisfied, send us some ‘flowers’ and move on on their unstoppable virtual journey.

Magnetic Transport on Google Top 10

I checked the latest submissions by Magnetic Transport Surplus to see their positioning on Google Top 10, here’s the example “Isuzu CXZ71U 10PD1 Dump Truck” – you can click on the images to enlarge them for better vision:

While it’s a small search term, there still seems to be a lot of interest as we can deduct from the Google Ads – and Magnetic Transport occupies spot 1 on Google Top 10 and… as you can see… even the next positions.

A customer looking up exactly this keyword on Google will have the choice between the 10 websites on the left and the ads (3 above and a couple to the right).

As Magnetic Transport occupies a number of positions on the left side, chances are big they capture the customer’s interest. Any person looking at their website costs Magnetic Transport nothing, not a cent.

If however the person checks out the various ads (on top and to the right, i.e. AdSense), each click will cost the owner of the ad – with no guarantees. If say 100 people click on Magnetic Transport, chances are big this leads to some form of exchange… especially as Magnetic Transport occupies, in this case, 4 out of the 10 top positions.

If these 100 people click on the various ads instead, firstly the clicks will be diluted between the various advertisers – and secondly each click costs the corresponding advertiser. Calculate the value of a click – is it $1? Is it $11? Depending on the daily budget of the advertiser, he can take a certain number of clicks until he disappears from the radar – depending on his daily advertising budget. Is it $100? Is it $1000?

Not so for Magnetic Transport who have invested in an excellent CMS setup on Semiomantics and learned some basic Online Publishing skills. Here, each click will count for them in terms of Traffic. What they are interested in is to offer customers what they are looking for at the right place: on Google Top 10 – meaning: what do they punch in as a search term? Isuzu Mixer truck? Isuzu 10PD1? The differences can be huge depending on the actual terminology you choose – just study the two images as an example… and it’s the same product:

The solution is not in the “either or” – it’s in spreading through study, research, effort and – most importantly – a razor-sharp goal in mind. Magnetic Transport is not limited by any financial budget of doing that and positioning themselves exactly and wherever it’s relevant for them to be found.

Semiomantics Web Design reaches the customer only once properly indexed on Google; it’s then up to the customer to expand his positions and build his authority… and this largely depends on regular daily postings!

Recent problems with mass emailing from our mail servers have lead us to look for different solutions uniting the advantages of email as well as of online publishing. Online mail archives can be useful, namely if the mails can be published in a Search Engine Optimized way. We are testing our Semiomantics tuned Newsletter on the YORGOO Pro Mailing List.

The basic idea is to send a newsletter to a mailing list in html or text form. The newsletter needs to be readable offline and online. Mail archives need to be created chronologically.

Semiomantics provides the publishing framework for the newsletter; this assures high visibility and Search Engine Optimization for each issue, similar to posts on Semiomantics tunes blogs.

Using Semiomantics Frameworks provides yet another benefit: recipients can easily comment the online version of the post.

We use the YORGOO Publishing publishing model. Associated authors provide content which will be  post edited on the newsletter site. We dispose of different publishing formats: mail recipients can read mail online either in mail format or in post format.

Depending on feed-back received during the test phase we will decide on the final format to use: if we encounter problems sending rich text format containing media, we may just resign to post text providing a link to the online version. In such a case, there is no restriction to the content of the newsletter. Rich text plus media may encounter limits when we hit email filters.

Newsletters can be generated using a  Post Editor or using an  Email Editor.

The YORGOO daily mail in the past has been a great, however time consuming tool. We will test different formats for daily, weekly and monthly mails. Post summaries could be mailed weekly or monthly, while daily posts could move out as they are edited.

We also may set different timers for YORGOO Pros and YORGOO Standard users.

New subscribers could additionally profit from a built in Get Started Quickly Auto-responder system.

Mails will be sent out in small batches, spreading the mailing over 24 hours.

WordPress has just released it’s latest version 2.8 where a bunch of new features are available for the comfort of average WP users. The most important change is in the speed and in the fact that themes can be loaded and easily edited from the dashboard.

The name Baker has been added in honor of the trumpeter Chet Baker (not Brenda Baker for once, but I could agree with naming it just for our Brenda).

Most plug-ins work well with WP 2.8. We have tested over 100 plug-ins on this site so far.

The Feedwordpress plug-in presents however a serious problem in the interface under Syndication Settings namely for individual links: the tag selector does not work and therefore tags cannot be added properly.

All recommended plug-ins work with all our scripts except the feedwordpress as mentioned above. If you are not using feedwordpress, you may just upgrade your installation form the dashboard and appreciate the new features.

As all scripts work perfectly well on WP 2.7.1, there is no immediate reason to upgrade and if you are using any of the problematic plug-ins, such as feedwordpress, just remain put; we are working on a fix and it’s probable that the feedwordpress developer will come up with a new version shortly.
