As a Web Designer and Internet Marketer, I am absolutely convinced that economic growth will largely depend on the way we Africans have access to, understand and embrace modern cutting-edge Technologies on the Internet and use the exciting online opportunities they offer. But…. yes, there is a but and it concerns PayPal and E-Tourism Africa!

PayPal and E-Tourism Africa

Whoever does online business knows that it stands and falls with fast, reliable, easily accessible and user-friendly payment gateways. In other words: online Banking. Everyone down here who has been around for a while, knows what this means and what I’m talking about. YEBO. . .

So… as we are dealing with the Tourism Industry – meaning international markets and in that sense global customers – the PayPal payment gateway is not only the largest and most widely used online banking system, but a safe and secure one. This means that it’s most peoples’ first choice when it comes to banking on the Internet. And this on a worldwide scale.

So what about PayPal and E-Tourism Africa?

While PayPal has been around since years for South Africans to pay their online bills, it’s only since the FIFA World Soccer event in 2010 that this crucial door was opened a little wider to South Africans – namely to receive money, i.e. to finally earn and with this join the modern world where this has been just ‘normal’ since ages.

While it was a crucial step to remove this major disadvantage that finally allowed Africans to also start building their Internet business, years of online revenue building were lost to the competition and, besides, the process is restricted to only one bank – First National Bank. Also, there are still a number of controls and restrictions we don’t find in PayPal accounts of developed countries, eg no PayPal Invoicing possible.

The 2011 E-Tourism Africa Summit in a way represents a large income avenue and therefore is the right place in my view to raise and address this issue and push for improvements and adaptation to international standards. In this respect the focus is not on the large corporate entities who have their main domains overseas anyway and are not affected; I am thinking of the vibrant African and South African small and medium businesses whose wings are clipped. It definitively hinders economic development. This needs to change quite urgently!

With purely online sales in Europe having increased by a staggering 20% between January and August 2011 – and a large contingent of these sales concerning the Travel and Tourism Industry, eg. flight tickets, hotel reservations etc., we can assume that many payments were made via PayPal – so having or not having PayPal in one’s country – to pay AND be paid in a fast and cost-efficient way – is not a question, it’s a ‘must. Definitively!

I am looking forward to seeing this important question addressed in a positive and future-oriented way.

For the last 4 years we have been able to provide cheap hosting for WordPress at the incredible rate of $35 per year for unlimited bandwidth, disk spacem, MySQL data bases and so on. Since the end of last year, we have noticed that the WordPress installations require much more server resources and that the performance of sites on the shared host was suffering from slow loading times and down times.

The interest in running a self-hosted WP based site is amongst others in the about endless possibilities available through the use of advanced scripts, such as Semiomantics, Plug-ins and Add-ons.

ChiHosters shared hosting is no longer in a position to provide unlimited shared hosting for WordPress installations. We regret this evolution, however we will try to offer attractive alternatives as per below.

After as before, we will offer cheap hosting on Chi at $35 per year. We will however limit the usage of each cPanel account in order to prevent over load. The Chi Package will be limited to 1 domain and maximum 3 sub-domains and we recommend, not to load more than 1 WordPress installations per cPanel for advanced WP scripts and usage.

We strongly recommend not to host commercial customers on Chi Hosters shared hosting package. This recommendation dates from 2009 and has been widely respected. We notice however that a small number of commercial customers accounts have been loaded to the host; these customers are suffering most from the disadvantages of the shared host.

We have set up our own dedicated servers at Hosting South Africa which have been specially equipped and configured to run complex WordPress installations. Also, at HSA we are in control of the total number of cPanel accounts accepted per machine.

At present there are 3 hosting packages available on HSA:

This is the equivalent of what we had on Chi, except that we provide the quality of dedicated hosting for about $52 per year. The cPanel accounts are limited to 1 domain and 3 sub-domains, whereas we recommend not to load more than 1 complex WP per cPanel.

This package is the recommended managed hosting pack for commercial and medium size web-sites. Most of our high profile commercial customer accounts are hosted on the Business Pack. The cost per month is $49.95. (formerly $34.95).

This pack is designed for large high traffic sites; essentially it represents 50% of the resources of a dedicated high-power host. The server is managed and tuned for Semiomantics high performance websites which need loads of CPU and Memory. Pricing $125 per month. This pack is better than any VMS and comparable to managed dedicated hosting. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and our solutions.

In addition to this we  offer managed dedicated hosts with custom configuration.

Some of our customers are active resellers and host customer accounts. Also they network multiple sites according to the YORGOO Publishing Model. In order to max out on the advantages of a small Publishing Network, the individual sites need to be set up on multiple servers and locations. We custom design hosting solutions for such customers involving at least 3 different addresses. The solution is ideal for Publishing Networks with high traffic and site-to-site movements (syndication and aggregation).

How to upgrade an existing Chi Account? As on the Chi Host we only provide cheap shared hosting,we are not in a position to offer upgrades on the same server. Any upgrade will be linked to migrating the site.

Hosting Cost:

The new Affordable Hosting for WordPress pack is the 1Rand Pack from HSA. Cost is 1 Rand per day or about $52 per year at the present exchange rate.

Migration:

For technical reasons beyond our influence, we cannot mass-move accounts; we charge for manual migration $25 per WordPress installation till the end of this month. If you have many set-ups to move, please discuss mass pricing with us.

Payment compensation

We will communicate the payment mode shortly, however it looks as if we will end up with charging for the new hosting as from June 2011 to compensate for the payments made under Chi.

The present situation has the advantage that we can reconsider our networks and redesign the flow of information profiting from the advanced knowledge we all have acquired during the past years.

Let’s eliminate sites and focus on a clean streamlined set-up. Reducing the number of sites and increasing their efficiency will make the Migration a trigger for higher visibility and performance.

Valentine’s Day Gifts

Here’s wishing everybody a “Happy Valentine’s Day” on 14 February 2010!

While it’s a bit late to start looking into preparing more sophisticated Valentine’s Day Gifts today, it’s never too late for Valentine’s Gift Ideas that go beyond buying a red rose, a pack of funnily formed chocolates or a bottle of Schnaps!

Valentine’s Day Gifts – Elegant DVD Packaging

Why not consider some Elegant DVD Packaging for your Valentine’s Day Gifts next year? Or for any other upcoming occasion like a Birthday, Promotion, Easter…?

In my example here, I wrapped up a collection of beautiful digital pictures I took this year – my most precious moments on Noordhoek Beach South Africa 2010. I added some “unaccomplished music” that fits this spectacular high tide scenario perfectly – if you know which one I mean -  and dedicated it to “My Valentine” in the Title.

Quality is obviously always the most important criterium. Firstly of the photo or background image and of course the typography. There are free fonts and those we pay heavily for – and the difference becomes especially obvious once we leave the virtual world and go into the Printing process! I was quite pleasantly surprised how well the two free fonts came out here.

In the detail above I took a screenshot of the original Valentine’s DVD Packaging Image I created and rendered at just medium quality (40) to keep the loading speed down. It’s all part of the ongoing learning process; experience – sometimes pretty painful – and attentive observation are my best teachers… and of course I have an absolute admiration for the real “Masters” !

My article earlier today on a very competitive keyword combination – Best Affordbale Advertising – broke through the virtual light barrier on the online highway!

I actually presented some work I had done with Action Scripts in Adobe Photoshop, namely Ezine Double Stack – considering the fact that Ezine Advertising is a good and affordable alternative and strategy when bringing one’s products in front of an audience.

As mentioned before, we monitor the results of what we are doing on a regular basis.

I was thunder-struck to see that – within just about 15 minutes – my article “Best Affordable Advertising” hit Google Top 10… not just any position, but Number ONE on Goolge ahead of 18,6 Million Search Returns!!!

To illustrate some of my thoughts about Best Affordable Advertising let’s look at Global Sports from London.

Global Sports offer one of the hottest products in our era of  fast mobility and people on the go: kicks, sneakers and blings.

However, despite a certain popularity in the normal world, Global Sports was literally non-existent on the Internet. . . until they got a Semiomantics Business setup…  which was soon upgraded to Semiomantics Ecommerce with the smashing Best Shopping module as featured in WP Best eShop. As their sales generated from their presence on the Internet continued to climb, they realized the need to even accelerate their rise to fame namely to:

• stay ahead of the competition,
• capture more Google Top 10 positions and keep them… and most importantly,
• double and triple their sales volume.

Ezine Advertsing

Today, you find Global Sports on most relevant keywords – and they are continuously building their Brand.

At the time, I created a series of ads to provide some affordable advertising for the Internet. To test our new Action Scripts as discussed in this week’s Photoshop Ycademy Workshops, I decided to go a step further and point out another interesting way of advertising: Ezine Advertising.

Ezine Advertising is a smart strategy to keep people ‘in the loop’ and above you see what my initial preparation for the cover (first picture) turns into… once rendered in Step 2.

Again, it is important to follow the instructions regarding the Action Script, keep the layers in good order in Step 1, and not to forget to save the results in clearly marked folders – especially the ‘rendered’ ones – to be found again at a mouseclick when a new client wants “something similar…”.

Writing and publishing blog posts is one thing, however, we need to monitor what our articles are doing and if and where they reach Google Top 10 positions.

As we see on the screenshot, the keyword phrase  “Affordable DVD Packaging”  has not too many search returns however many ads – which is indicative. We reached our target very fast with 3/10 positions on Google Top 10 – in this case with yesterday’s article, which was carried up by sites of our Semiomantics Publishing Network.

Let’s see what my second shot at that target will achieve! These days, the Formula 1 takes place on the Internet highway and I’m driving a Semiomantics XO – what’s YOUR vehicle?
