New Look with Semiomantics XO 2011

Following yesterday’s mail on the New Look with Semiomantics XO 2011 for my Author Blog  HERE – I continue developing the Homepage, where I worked on a slider that appeared unsatisfactory for my purpose as the fonts and some parts of the admittedly relatively complex images became fuzzy.

My conclusion so far is that the Wonder Tool may have its limits when going beyond its default sizes (720x540px), especially when dealing with complex and multi-layered images as the ones I have created on my various Semiomantics Evolution Flash sites.

Working with Layers

Working with layers and fading nuances has always been part of my preferred way of expression, be it in the many Illustrations I did -  Aquarelles, Airbrush Artwork or Pastels – the large oil paintings or and especially in the old technique of Japanese Lacquer which I learned in my years as an artist in Paris, France, painting large panels, layer by layer and sanding each layer down before applying the next to get incredibly beautiful and etherial results. This is certainly one of the reasons why Adobe Photoshop is my favorite online tool and I think its creator most definitely deserves an online Oscar!

Having carefully prepared my slides in various dimensions and weights and then extensively experimented with this kind of slideshow has taught me what works well and what doesn’t – at least with this specific tool and as to my taste.

This experience allows me to estimate what I can suggest to clients who may have similar wishes and ideas. As Web Designers we always have to advise what’s possible – and at what price, be it in terms of quality or price.

Often we see stunning work on a site and when investigating what is involved and, in many cases, what licenses have to be acquired, meaning what the customer would have to pay at the end of the day – we may be in for surprises. Many things are easier said than done; although as always there are many exceptions to the rule.

As the past Ycademy seminar taught us many things, I will continue with another approach . . .
