Well, what do they say….you can’t win ‘em all !?  The first half of the mid-year school holidays here on the Garden Route was wet and cold. The continual rain over five days was a reminder of how things used to be here years ago, and was very welcome.  The forests are wonderfully moist and healthy again, and the little streams are flowing.

The ‘bookish’ kids, and those into their Playstations, and those into just lazing the day away in bed, had a good time with the wet, wintry weather. But those who couldn’t wait to get out of their classrooms and into the sun outdoors must have found it a bit frustrating.

Well, this week the weather turned right around. Last weekend was warm and sunny, so was the week, and this weekend is going to be the same.

What about a new experience, those bookish and Playstation-ey ones of you here in Knysna on holiday? Come out into the sun, come to Lightleys at the White Bridge over the lagoon, and hire a canoe for the day. Bring some grub with you, and push off in the direction of the Knysna river.

It’ll blow you away!  Unspoilt Nature IS still out there. Real. ALIVE, y’know. Not like those fake forests in DVDs and video games.  At least ONCE in your life you should experience the difference….

Skipper’s licence contact

We’re talking about Skipper’s licences for two reasons. The first is to tell you again that you DON’T need a Skipper’s Licence to ‘drive’ your Lightleys Houseboat – if you’ve been clever enough to book some time on one of our comfy, vibey craft.

When you arrive at Lightleys Reception, we show you an informative video, and you are briefed again by our jetty crew on your boat.  SAMSA, the SA Marine Safety Association, is happy to let us let YOU go out on the lagoon afterwards – and touch wood for more than 30 years our guests have proven to be intelligent and responsible enough to keep themselves safe on board.

So, now that we’ve clarified THAT, this week we came across a guy who can ease your passage if you’d like to get yourself a Skipper’s Licence.

His name is Loftus Heunis, and you can contact him on 044 690 7969 (or 072 765 3034). But you’d better move fast – his upcoming course is on July 23 and 25, and it’s important to register early because there’s quite a bit of documentation and study required before then.

Loftus can arrange a licence to certify you for inland waters, and coastal waters up to one sea mile.

That old salt Danie Swiegelaar has joined Loftus, and Danie can arrange a Category C (up to 15 sea miles) licence.
